Attention Due to a lack of response in the past few weeks the Young Adult Book Drive 4 Rural Libraries will be closing on June 10th. I would like to thank everyone who helped out either by making donations, giving me advice on the website or on where to find books. If you would like to make a final donation it would be very much appreciated. We've managed to collect around 280 books and help five libraries. I am still in possession of some of the donations and will be making the final delivery after the book drive closes. Thank you so much for everything!

Hey!

My name is Jen and I am collecting young adult books for the small rural libraries in my area. I am a senior in college, I will graduate this June with a bachelor in literature. In August I will be going to grad school at Clarion University for my Master in Library Science, my ultimate goal is to be a young adult librarian.

I currently work at the David A Howe Library in Wellsville, NY as the interlibrary loan clerk. I started this book drive because of the lack of young adult books at my library. Our children's librarian has a very small budget to work with and spends the majority of it on youth and children's books. I would like to increase our collection and I would love to relocate it to another part of the library. If you would like to donate books please email me at bookdrivegirl@yahoo.com and I will give you an address for where you can send them. I would like to set up a way for people to donate money too if they would like or instead of books but I'm not sure on how to go about that. If you have suggestions please tell me.

Thanks
Jen

Wish List
You will find a wish list for book drive girl on Amazon and on Alibris. If you would like to purchase a used book and have it sent directly to me for the book drive that would be wonderful and save you the trip to the post office with your used books. I honestly recommend Alibris, they have amazing deals on used books.

We've broke a thousand hits on the website. I went through and added a bunch of paperbacks to the Wish List for a low cost option. The books I added were on the ALA Best Paperbacks for Teens list. We have forty-one books that have been donated so far. I'm really hoping to go to work today and find a box of used books waiting for me. I know there are some on the way they just haven't arrived yet. Interest seems to have died down a bit and we can't let that happen. Five authors have offered up a copy of their books. I've been contacted by a publishing company that wanted to know if there were any conditions for corporate donations. I've emailed them back and am waiting for their reply. I'm considering emailing some large city libraries to see if they would consider donating the YA books they weed instead of putting them in their booksale. Keep checking the website and Wish List for updates.

Thanks
Jen

Thirty six books have been donated so far. Two books that were from the wish list arrived today. You should have seen the look on my mother's face when she saw the book "This Book is About Sex" she disapproved greatly of it. Oh well.

The author Tanya Lee Stone has donated her book A Bad Guy Can Be Good For a Girl to the book drive. Thanks Tanya! We now have 13 fiction books and 8 non-fiction books that have been donated. Used books that are on their way here will be added once we receive them. I totally forgot about the wish list on Alibris. Go check it out for cheap used books to donate.

I just received an email from Ron Cree author of the new book "Desert Blood 10pm/9c." He is going to send a couple of copies of his book for the book drive. How awesome is that? He wants to know if he should sign them or not, what do you think? I'm gonna post something on the website so he can get more PR for his new book. Thanks Ron!!!!

This is so great! Nine books have been bought off the Amazon Wish List. I'm hoping to go into work tomorrow and discover some boxes of books waiting for me. I'll keep my fingers crossed. The website has had 606 hits. Now just imagine if every person who visited the website donated just one book, we would be able to fill a library. I've contacted the Genesee Library which is in my neighborhood and asked them about the possibility of hanging flyers around town promoting the book drive and listing their address as a drop off point for the locals. I'll let you know what they say. I've already designed a flyer so I'm hoping they will say yes.

Accourding to tripid.lycos my website has been viewed 24 times. There have been no purchases off the wish list and the director has not emailed me about using the library as the delivery address. Woe is me...

Woohoo!! I did it. The YA Book Drive now has a website. Please feel free to check it out.

I've gotten a lot of suggestions for books that I should add to my wish list. My Amazon wish list is now over 200 books. Any books that are not in as good of shape or that the libraries turn down for various reasons I am going to give away to the teens in the area. I thought I would set up a table on the library's lawn if possible and give the books away to teens that show up. That way they are still getting in to the right hands.

I think I want to continue this book drive for quite a while. Perhaps I shall set up a website for it and collect books for teens and libraries. I would also like to find out how to set it up so people can make monetary donations to the site and I need to think of a name for my little book drive. Something catchy.

Books I Bought
I went ahead and bought some books off Amazon to add to the book drive. I don't have any YA books on my bookshelves to donate so I am buying:

Colleges That Change Lives : 40 Schools You Should Know About Even If You're Not a Straight-A Student
So You Want to Be a Wizard: The First Book in the Young Wizards Series
Listen Up: Voices from the Next Feminist Generation
Wasted: A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia
Not the Only One : Lesbian and Gay Fiction for Teens
What You Don't Know Can Kill You
Am I Blue? : Coming Out from the Silence

I just received an email from an author of young adult books. Cecil Castellucci has said that she will be sending a copy of her books Boy Proof and The Queen of Cool for the book drive. How cool is that!? Boy Proof made the ALA Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers and ALA Best Books for Young Adults. I really hope she doesn't mind me mentioning her name here. Check out her website for more information on her http://www.misscecil.com

I've received a little over a dozen emails from people who are willing to donate to the project. I am working on a Wish List at Amazon in case people would like to purchase some books instead of donating their old teen novels. I'm having some technical difficulties with my Amazon wish list at the moment though. I will post the link to it later.

Anti-gay Oklahoma Library Legislation Passes House

On March 15, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed 60-33 a bill intended to block funding for any public library unless it removed all materials deemed "sexually explicit" or "homosexually themed" from children's and young adult sections and placed those materials in a special adults-only area. In addition, the bill calls for the creation of a panel charged with developing an annual list of materials that must be so restricted. The bill next makes its way to the Senate, which has not taken up the issue as of yet.
